You+: Building Your Speech Persona

When you walk into a tournament, you’re not just yourself. You’re carrying a binder, a suit, a water bottle, and — whether you realize it or not — a brand.

Think about your favorite influencers. They all have something that makes them instantly recognizable: a look, a tone, an energy. That’s not an accident. It’s a crafted persona. And in speech, you can create your own: a “You+” version of yourself that amplifies your best traits and protects you when the pressure gets high.

What is a Speech Persona?

Your speech persona isn’t about pretending to be someone you’re not. It’s about exaggerating what’s already real.

  • It’s your confidence turned up a notch.

  • It’s the part of you that’s focused, polished, and ready to perform.

  • It’s an alter ego that helps you feel powerful and safe.

Put simply: your Speech Persona is You+.

Why Build One?

At tournaments, the difference between blending in and standing out often comes down to presence. A persona helps you:

  • Signal to others (judges, peers, competitors) how you want to be seen.

  • Manage nerves by stepping into a role instead of feeling exposed.

  • Set the tone for your whole day from warm-ups to awards.

Think of it as armor: protective, empowering, and uniquely yours.

How to Create Your You+ Persona

Start with two perspectives:

1. Outside-In

How do others already see you? Ask teammates or coaches for the traits that stand out such as your energy, your humor, your intensity. Then, lean into those.

2. Inside-Out

How do you want to be seen? Confident? Sharp? Fearless? Take traits you already have that fit that image, and amplify them.

It doesn’t have to be 100% accurate to everyday you, but it must be believable. If it feels fake, it will backfire.

Activation: Turning It On

A persona doesn’t just appear when you step into the round. The best speakers have rituals for “activating” it:

  • Running your speech in the shower the morning of the tournament.

  • Walking into the school with a power song in your earbuds.

  • Taking a brisk lap and saying a quick “good morning” to competitors.

  • Warming up in a hideaway spot before heading to your round.

These little rituals signal to your brain: game time.

Deactivation: Turning It Off

Equally important is turning your persona off. If you never step out of “Speech Mode,” you risk burning out. Build reflective habits for winding down:

  • Save critiques for Sunday.

  • Journal about what worked and what didn’t.

  • Drop the persona on the ride home and let yourself just be.

When Personas Backfire

A speech persona shouldn’t keep you from listening to your body or connecting with people. If your “You+” tells you to ignore your needs, shut out teammates, or blow off feedback, it’s time to adjust.

Remember: your persona should protect and empower, not isolate.

The Takeaway

Your Speech Persona is your brand at tournaments. It tells the world who you are before you even speak. It hypes you up, protects your nerves, and keeps you focused.

So don’t just show up as you. Show up as You+, the amplified, tournament-ready version of yourself.
